At an hour shy of midnight, prom-goers began to disperse from the gymnasium of Browning High school. High on excitement, and eager to indulge in after-prom activities, they made a beeline for the parking lot. While some of the teens made plans to meet up at house parties, others were preparing to engage in more intimate activities.

While Kimi and Ethan were calling it an early night and preparing to return to their respective homes, Tristan and Natalie were planning on hitting up an all-night coffee shop for some pancakes. Claudia and Lucas, who had only disclosed that they were going to spend some “alone time,” were being openly eyed by the other two couples, and as a result, began to feel as if they were standing directly beneath a spotlight.

Along with Kimi and Ethan, Natalie wore a smirk that seemed to convey she knew exactly what Claudia and Lucas were planning to do that night. Tristan, however, wore a rather tight lipped expression, and warily studied Lucas as he stood silently with hands in his pockets.

One didn’t have to be a mind reader to guess that a sliver of jealousy had cut right through him, but as Claudia noticed the way his neck was stiff and strained, she realized that something deeper was going on. No sooner had this thought gone through her head, did Tristan suddenly step forward, and after taking Claudia by the hand, pulled her hastily towards his car.

“What the heck?” Completely baffled, she gave Tristan a curious look, then threw a look over her shoulder at Lucas, who along with Kimi and Ethan, stood dumbfounded.

By the time they reached his car, she sensed that Lucas was following behind them. But before he could catch up, the twosome had already slipped into the backseat of Tristan’s Lincoln Continental. A soft click was heard as Tristan locked the car door behind them, and with an urgency that caught Claudia completely off guard, he cradled her face in his hands.

Before she even knew what was happening, he leaned in to kiss her, slipping his tongue past the seal of her lips and into the wet heat of her mouth. Even if she could have stopped him, she wouldn’t have, because the desire she felt was so incredibly profound. But along with desire was something else – something deeper and way more powerful than anything she’d ever experienced before. Love, perhaps?

No, that was ridiculous. She couldn’t love Tristan, because he was her friend. But as soon as the word “friend” passed through her thoughts, Tristan’s tongue extended to caress the tip of her own. Instantaneously, and with the strength of an electric current, a jolt shot through her body.

As if to confirm that their tongues were indeed the conductors, Tristan touched his wet muscle to hers once again, and on feeling a jolt that was even stronger than the first, Claudia hastily pulled back.

“So you felt it, too.” A grin crossed Tristan’s face.

“What was it?”

“A sign. Isn’t that obvious?”

“A sign of what?”

“I think you already know.”

Dead silence passed between them. That was until a sharp rap against the window broke loudly through the stillness. Swiveling their heads in the direction of the sound, Claudia and Tristan saw that Lucas was staring right at them, and with a sharp motion of his hand, signaled for Tristan to unlock the door. Rather than heed his request, Tristan turned his attention away from the window. Then with his gaze back on Claudia, he let loose some urgent words.

“Don’t go home with Lucas tonight.”

“What?”

“Don’t go home with him.”

“Why not?”

“I’m not exactly sure. I just have this feeling that something bad is going to happen.”

“So you’re going entirely on feeling. None of this is connected to any solid proof.”

“You know I don’t bullshit people, Claude.” He stared unblinkingly into her eyes. “When I get a sense that something is going to happen, it does.”

“But you don’t know what it is?”

He shook his head.

“And It’s definitely connected to Lucas…”

A nod from Tristan confirmed her words.

“If this is about Lucas taking advantage of me, he would never do that.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’m sure. He’s had loads of opportunities, and never once forced me to do anything I didn’t want.”

“Doesn’t mean that he won’t in the future.”

“Lucas Isn’t a rapist.”

“I didn’t say that he was.”

“Okay, what is this really all about? Do you truly want to warn me about something bad, or are you just jealous that Lucas is taking me to his house?”

“I just don’t feel good about you leaving here with him, all right? This isn’t out of jealousy, It’s out of concern.”

“So you *aren’t* jealous?”

“Of course I am. But I’m not trying to block you two from being together. If you want to give it up to a guy like him, then go for it. I just think it’d be a terrible waste.”

“Why, because It’s not you?”

“No. Because he’s been with half the girls in school, Claudia. Aren’t you even the slightest bit concerned about that, or do you not have any standards at escort all?”

“You’re a dick,” she said. “It’s none of your business who Lucas has been with, and It’s definitely not your business that I’m considering having sex with him. It’s my body, and I can do what I want with it.”

“So you *are* considering it.” Tristan’s face fell. “You honestly want Lucas to be the first guy that you have sex with?”

“I don’t know. It’s a possibility that it might happen someday,” she admitted before adding, “And so what if I do? Why is my sex life of such importance to you? It’s like you’re obsessed, or something.”

“I’m not obsessed, I’m concerned.”

“Well don’t be,” she said. “You’re my friend, not my mother. So start acting like it.”

There was a thick tenseness hanging in the air now, but instead of silence settling between Claudia and Tristan, there was only the unmistakable energy of a third person watching their every move. Lucas, whose face was still visible through the passenger window, stared them down with an intensity that wasn’t just keen, but downright incensed.

Unlike Tristan, who was completely unbothered by the fact that they were being observed, Claudia was extremely uneasy, and eager to leave the confines of Tristan’s car. The thought of being confronted by Lucas, however, caused her to fidget in her seat.

“We shouldn’t be in here,” she suddenly stated. “It’s wrong.”

“Why?”

“Because you kissed me.”

“And you kissed back,” he rebutted.

“Yeah, but I was caught off guard.”

“Is that what you call it?” A gentle smirk touched the corners of his lips.

“We’re *friends*,” she stated. “Nothing more.”

“We’re more than friends. I think that’s been established by the kiss we shared.”

“A kiss that never should have happened.”

“But it did, and you enjoyed it.”

Her deep brown complexion concealed the flush in her cheeks. “That’s besides the point, I’m with someone. And for you to kiss a girl that’s already taken is pretty damn bold.”

“I had to do it, Claude. It was the only way I could make you realize how compatible we are.”

“I have a boyfriend.”

“I know.”

“Which means I’m not available.”

“Not now. But you will be soon.”

An incredulous look crossed Claudia’s face, and for a moment she considered asking Tristan if he could see into the future. But a loud banging against the window directed her attention to Lucas, who was glaring at them through the glass of the passenger window. With a coil of anxiety in her stomach, Claudia tugged at the lock on her door, but on realizing that it wouldn’t budge, she turned her head to look at Tristan.

“Can you release the power locks, please? I’d like to get out now.”

“There are no power locks. This car has a manual system.”

“Then why isn’t the lock disengaging?”

“Because I don’t want it to.”

Both amazed and irritated at the same time, Claudia gave Tristan a long, hard look. Ever since they’d forged a friendship, he’d been nothing but sweet and kind, perhaps even a bit of a pushover, but suddenly she was seeing this other side of him.

While it wasn’t entirely unpleasant, it did make her wonder if he wasn’t being unreasonable, not to mention completely stubborn. The Tristan she knew wouldn’t even consider kissing a girl who was involved with another guy, and he certainly wouldn’t keep her hostage in his car when she requested to be let out. Or would he?

While pondering this question, she came to the conclusion that everyone had two sides to them, and it was only now that a situation had arisen which allowed these character flaws to finally be unshrouded. But she didn’t have the patience for this today, and certain that Lucas was growing angrier by the minute, she knew that she had to bring this situation to an end.

“Don’t play around with me, Tristan. I’m really not in the mood tonight.”

“Say you won’t go home with him, and I’ll unlock the door.” Rather than request, Tristan’s tone seemed to beg, his eyes growing sad as he stared into her eyes.

“I won’t go home with him,” Claudia responded. “It was never my intention to, anyhow.”

“Do you really mean that?”

“Yes.”

“What if he pressures you to do it anyways?”

“Then he does. Doesn’t mean that I’ll go along with it.”

Instead of taking comfort in this response, Tristan only seemed to grow more uneasy. A few seconds passed, then several more before he pushed out a breath. Then with brows that were slightly wrinkled, he offered a response.

“Have Kimi and Ethan take you home.”

“But that doesn’t make any sense,” Claudia said. “Why can’t I just have Lucas take me home himself?”

“It’s a premonition, Claudia. I really think you should heed it.”

“I don’t know Tristan, this is just too weird.” The look she gave him was unashamedly wary. “I mean, I came to prom with Lucas, shouldn’t I be leaving with him as well? And how is it going to sound when I tell him I want someone else to take me home?”

“Are you going escort bayan to do it, or not?” Tristan asked. “A simple yes or no, that’s all I need.”

“No,” she firmly said. “Now open the door and let me out.”

“Fine.”

Shifting his gaze towards Claudia’s passenger door, Tristan keenly focused on the engaged lock. He blinked once before the lock popped upward, and with an eagerness that was conveyed through her movements, Claudia swung the car door wide open.

“Your lack of faith in me really hurts, Claudia.” He spoke with such emotion that a waver in his voice could be heard. “I thought we had a special bond, but I guess I was wrong.”

Almost immediately, her shoulders sagged with dejection. But before the tightness in her chest could become any worse, she slid out of the car and made her way towards Lucas, who stood directly behind the Lincoln with arms crossed against his solid chest.

“What were you doing in there?” He asked in a deep tone of voice.

“Talking.”

“Just talking, and nothing else?”

“It’s not what you think,” Claudia said. “I mean, it’s not as bad as it looks.”

Wearing an expression which could only be described as complete disbelief, Lucas narrowed his eyes at her. But his attention was swiftly stolen as Tristan slid out of the backseat.

“What the fuck is your problem?” Lucas questioned.

“I don’t have a problem.” Now standing on his feet, Tristan maintained a confident stance. “What’s yours?”

“You took my girlfriend into the backseat of your car.”

“Yeah?”

“So what were you doing with her?”

“Talking.”

“Bullshit. Now tell me the truth before I beat your ass.”

“All right, I kissed her.”

“I knew it.” His nostrils flared as he bellowed, “I fucking knew you were messing around with her.”

“Look, I’m not proud of myself, but I won’t apologize for-“

With eerie suddenness and startling speed, Lucas landed a solid uppercut to Tristan’s jaw. So shockingly strong, it knocked him right off his feet. But no sooner had he hit the ground, did Lucas advance upon him.

He barely had time to grab Tristan by the collar before Claudia attempted to stop him from landing another punch, but so entrenched in anger, Lucas didn’t even notice that she was there. It was only until Ethan stepped in that Lucas was finally restrained, and through a whole lot of effort, managed to push him away from Tristan.

“Chill,” Ethan said while positioning his body in front of Lucas. “Just let it go, okay?”

“Fuck naw.” Lucas’s teeth were bared, hands clenching and unclenching as he tried to evade the barrier that Ethan had created with his body. “This shitheel is going to pay.”

“Come on, dude. Don’t do this.” Now pressing both palms against Lucas’s chest, Ethan pushed against him with all of his strength. “They catch you fighting out here, you won’t be allowed to walk at graduation.”

At first these words seemed to have no effect on discouraging Lucas, but as the seconds passed and Lucas’s gaze shifted to Claudia, something changed in his body language. His neck, which had been corded, began to look normal once again. Gradually his breaths began to slow, and the teeth which had been so fiercely bared only a few minutes ago were now covered by his lips.

If his hunched posture was anything to judge by, he was feeling dejected. But it was the sadness in his eyes that really tugged at Claudia’s heart. He blinked a few times, as if forcing back tears, then swallowed a lump in his throat before pushing out some words.

“You want him, you can have him.”

Simple and to the point, the words hung heavy in the air. But it wasn’t until Lucas turned and walked away that a heaviness filled Claudia’s chest. Shocked into silence, she could only watch Lucas retreat further away.

She wanted very badly to go after him, or perhaps even shout out that it was all a misunderstanding, but her throat muscles had suddenly locked up, and no mater how hard she tried to move her feet, they remained rooted in the spot. So lost in a fog of heartache, she didn’t even realize that Kimi and Natalie were consoling her with comforting touches. But as Tristan began walking towards her, her eyes turned flinty and cold.

“Stay away from me.”

“Claudia, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for this to happen.”

“I said stay away,” she repeated while watching him walk even closer. “Just keep your distance, you understand?”

Those were the words that effectively halted him, and as she turned and ran in the direction of Lucas’s truck, he was left to stand there with a lowered head.

“Lucas, wait!” Claudia called out as she approached his idling Chevy. “Babe, please. You don’t understand.”

No longer just idling, the engine revved angrily. Tires screeched against the pavement, gravel spitting up as the car reversed. Then in a harsh jerk forward, the Chevy was off, tearing out of the parking lot with a startingly loud rumble.

Half a minute later, she heard the sound of footsteps hurrying towards bayan escort her. A few moments after that, she saw that Kimi and Natalie had arrived to console her. While one of the girls threw an arm around her shoulder, the other looped one around her waist. And with Claudia sandwiched in the middle, they made their way towards Ethan’s car.

She didn’t remember being strapped into the backseat of his classic Volkswagon beetle, nor did she recall the vehicle driving away from the school and along the road that lead to her house. She vaguely recalled Kimi trying to make small talk along the way, but she did keenly recollect how terrible she felt about the night ending on such a sour note.

At half past eleven, the vintage beetle puttered into the driveway of Claudia’s house, and after squeezing out of the tiny backseat, she thanked Kimi and Ethan for the ride.

“Not a problem,” Ethan said while giving her a wan smile. “Take care of yourself, okay? And I look forward to seeing you again soon.”

She gave a nod, followed by a weak smile before shifting her gaze to Kimi.

“I’ll be up late tonight if you wanna talk,” she said. “Otherwise call me in the morning, okay?”

“All right.”

Slowly, Claudia made her way towards the front porch, and only after she’d opened the door and slipped into the house, did she hear the sound of the vintage beetle driving away. For some reason she stood there listening to it die down to a faint putter, but instead of heading toward her room, she rested her back against the front door.

She wasn’t the least bit tired but it just felt right to close her eyes, so with lids lowered and a faint release of breath, she sunk down to the hardwood floor. Her eyes were still closed when the creak of footsteps approached her, and in a deep voice that was entirely fitting of his towering stature, Big John offered a greeting.

“You’re home early.”

Her eyes popped open, narrowing just slightly as they adjusted to the bright overhead light. “Oh, hi.”

“Have a good time?”

It was okay.”

“Just okay?”

She nodded.

“I can put the kettle on if you wanna talk about it.”

“I don’t.”

The sharpness in her tone made him flinch just slightly, causing Claudia to follow up with softer words.

“I’m sorry. I’m just not in the mood right now.”

“No problem.”

“I might be up for a chat in the morning, though.”

“Okay. That sounds good.”

“Is my mom up?”

“Yep, she’s in the bathroom.”

“Late night bath?”

“Of course. It’s Saturday night, Isn’t it?”

As a grin spread across his face, a faint smile crossed hers.

“Guess I’ll say hi to her before bed.”

With palms planted on the ground, she lifted herself up. But she only got as far as the hallway threshold before Big John called out to her.

“Claudia?”

Turning her head, she saw that he was watching her with concern.

“You came home pretty early, so I have to ask this.” He briefly paused before following up with, “Did Lucas treat you okay?”

“Yes. He treated me just fine.”

“You sure?”

She nodded.

“If he did try anything with you, you would tell me or your mom, right?”

“Yes.”

“All right.” He gently smiled before saying, “Well the next time you see him, tell him we’d like to have him over for dinner. I think it’s time we got to know this boyfriend of yours a little better.”

The nod that Claudia gave was just barely noticeable. And with a weighted chest that made it hard to breathe, she headed for her bedroom.

* * * *

It wasn’t the scraping of tree branches against her bedroom window, but the steady tapping against the glass pane that woke Claudia from sleep. Still foggy from slumber, her mind came to the conclusion that it was only a dream.

This thought, however, was rapidly dismissed as she glanced at the deep red letters on her digital clock. Noting that it was 1:32 a.m., she groggily sat up in bed, but as she caught sight of a familiar face behind the glass of her bedroom window, an incredulous look crossed her features.

In what seemed to be one single fluid movement, she was out of bed and unlocking the window. Having always been a little stubborn, she had to work at sliding it upward, and as the cool night air drifted into her bedroom, she stared wide-eyed at her late night visitor.

“Surprised?” Still clad in the suit he had worn to prom, Lucas gave her a friendly smile.

“Uh, yeah.” As his gaze drifted to the lower part of her body, she suddenly remembered that the only thing she had on was a cropped T-shirt and a pair of boyshorts.

“So you gonna invite me in, or what?”

“I can’t,” she said. “My mom and her boyfriend are in the room right across the hall.”

“So?”

“I don’t wanna get caught.”

“I can be quiet,” he said before allowing his lips to tug into a grin. “But the question is, can you?”

“Lucas, we can’t.”

“Can’t what?” He cheekily asked.

“Hang out in my room.”

“Come on, Claude. I drove all the way out here to see you.”

“You only live ten minutes away.”

“Maybe so,” he admitted. “But you owe me for kissing Tristan.”

“I wasn’t the one who initiated it.”

“But you didn’t stop him either, did you?”
